The Fairtrade product which I chose is cane sugar of the brand Wiener Zucker. Wiener Zucker is an Austrian Company which belongs to AGRANA a product development company. They sell their products to all neighboring countries of Austria. Wiener Zucker pays close attention to sustainable production that is the reason why all their products are fair trade.

Especially the picking of cane sugar which gets harvested in Swaziland a landlocked country in southern Africa is important to them. Cane sugar has a fine malty and exotic taste why it is usually used for baking, drinks like coffee or cocktails such as mojito. In Swaziland are bad working conditions in addition to that human rights are virtually non-existent but with fair trade we support a better life for the farmers and workers. The use of pesticides makes the harvest of cane sugar highly dangerous apart from this the farmers are paid poorly or not at all.

But what is the difference between normal production and fair-trade harvest? Like already mentioned the working conditions are very bad, the use of pesticides is very harmful in the long term and even children are used in such a job. With the purchase of fair-trade sugar, we ensure that the workers are paid fairly and that they can work under good circumstances without damaging their body. Sugar is very important in today’s world and is also needed around the globe, which is why it is twice as important to pay attention to sustainability and to do something for it.
